Did you know that Lexington County, South Carolina is ranked number 6 in Best Counties to Live in South Carolina? And the county seat of Lexington is growing fast and thriving.

This charming town of about 25,000 people located about 20 minutes west of Columbia is attracting many people from other states and other parts of South Carolina who make it their home. And in this post, I’m going to tell you why. So what’s so great about this small Columbia suburb?

#1. Located on Lake Murray

A big draw for many people who move to Lexington is that it’s situated at the southeastern tip of beautiful Lake Murray, so it’s perfect if you like to go boating, fishing, or do any water sports.

The Lexington area also has many boat launches, docks, and marinas that fishers and boaters can find nearby. Plus there’s a decent selection of local RV parks and places to go camping, so Lexington is great for outdoor enthusiasts.

There’s also the Lake Murray Public Park where you can walk or jog along the dam over the lake, or swim in the lake and relax on the sandy beach where you can grill and have a picnic.

#2. Affordable Housing & Lower Cost of Living

Did you know that South Carolina’s cost of living is one of the lowest in the country? The cost of living in South Carolina is 5 percent below the national average according to Rentcafe.com.1 Plus, the cost of living in Lexington is lower than some other cities in the state.

Living in Lexington is affordable because the overall cost of living is 3 percent lower than in the rest of the U.S. A big part of this lower cost of living is the fact that housing costs in Lexington are 21 percent lower than the national average! 2

For example, In Lexington, the median home cost amounts to $235,000, encompassing various types of residences. Contrasted with the national average home price of $417,700 as of the fourth quarter of 2023, 2 this highlights a significant disparity. In fact, it translates to a variance exceeding $182,000!

#3. Great Schools

If you have school-aged children, it’s helpful to know about Lexington’s schools.

The schools in Lexington are just one more great thing about this community. Lexington has a highly rated public school district. In fact, Lexington County School District 1 is now ranked as the 4th best public school district in South Carolina! And the district has an overall grade of “A” on Niche.com.3 This means that many of its schools have achieved excellent “A” ratings.

So now that you know Lexington’s housing costs, cost of living and it’s great schools, I’ll tell you about it’s community, fun and recreation.

#4. Sense of Community

Besides being right by the lake, one of my favorite things about Lexington is that it has a strong sense of community. This is because it has a small-town feel, a quaint but thriving downtown, and it offers a variety of community-centered events throughout the year.

These include festivals, a farmer’s market, outdoor concerts and live music, history tours and more. Locals gather at the Ice House Amphitheater downtown to enjoy many events and performances throughout the year.

There are also plenty of family friendly venues like the Lexington County Museum with children’s programs that have games, tours, and live, and hands-on demonstrations. I’ll go into more detail about this museum later.

Also in the summertime, families can cool off in a community pool, and there are a few splash pads to choose from. This is only a few of the many things you can do for fun in Lexington which brings me to my next point.

#5. Fun and Recreation

People who live in Lexington know they don’t have to go far to find something to do. You’ll find a variety of shopping and dining with many family-owned businesses as well as large chain stores and restaurants here. And there’s always something going on in town like festivals, outdoor concerts, history tours, and community events.

Lexington also has a thriving downtown that’s easy to walk around in, and Main Street is lined with restaurants, shops, boutiques, studios and more. There are also places that are unique to Lexington, like the Lexington County Museum which I mentioned earlier.

The museum educates others about Lexington’s history from the colonial times through the Civil War. It also holds special events for adults, children and families year round.

Lexington also has the Market at Icehouse, an open-air farmer’s market held at the Icehouse Amphitheater in downtown. Here the community comes together for a farmer’s market where you can buy fresh, locally grown produce, try delicious food from locally-owned food trucks, and you can also shop for homemade crafts. The Market at Icehouse is open every Saturday from May to October.

Besides the farmer’s market, many other community events are held at the Icehouse Amphitheater. This beautiful venue seats up to 900 people and hosts community events, live music, performances and concerts throughout the year.

If you like water sports, fishing, or spending time on the water, don’t forget that Lake Murray is just on the edge of town. Also the Saluda River ends in Lexington and is great for kayaking, canoeing and tubing.

Sports fans can watch a Lexington Blowfish baseball game at the Lexington County Baseball Stadium. Or if you’re an outdoor enthusiast, Lexington has some great options like Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve which is great for hiking.

There’s also a few community parks including Virginia Hylton Park which has playgrounds and picnic areas. Or you can watch the sunset on the lake as you walk along the Dreher Shoals Dam. Or you can go camping or hiking at Dreher Island State Park on Lake Murray.

As you can see there are plenty of things to do in Lexington! But if Lexington doesn’t have the places or events you like to go to, you can always drive just about 20 minutes to Columbia where there’s much more to do and see.

Now it makes sense why so many people are moving to this town and making it their home. But this is just a handful of the many great things about Lexington.
